Often by the end of your first session, I can offer you an assessment of your situation and say whether or not you would benefit from my services. Often, if I cannot help you I can refer you to a group of trusted professionals. What is most important is that you feel a connection to your therapist so work can begin. Sometimes two or three sessions are necessary for a more comprehensive evaluation and to decide whether to begin treatment. I will always discuss my view of the problem, therapeutic objectives and perspectives on the possible outcome of treatment. I encourage questions about benefits and any concerns or questions you may have. Dual relationships of a business or personal nature between therapists and patients are unethical and illegal. Therefore if I or you feel there is a conflict of interest I will gladly refer you to one of my trusted professionals.
All information that a patient discloses in psychotherapy, including the therapist’s written notes and records, is completely confidential. I will not disclose confidential information to anyone unless you have granted permission in writing, or where the law requires disclosure. If you disclose that you are going to hurt yourself or someone else, confidentiality has to be broken. In situations such as couple or family therapy, where individual are in treatment together, no secrets will be kept from the other family member; this is to preserve the therapeutic alliance
Health Insurance and Confidentiality
When a psychotherapist signs on with an insurance company, he or she is agreeing to significantly reduced fees and other insurance company policies in hopes of higher volume through that company’s provider list. I choose not to adhere to a high volume managed care insurance panel practice and I do not get clients from health insurance companies. I am strictly a referral based psychotherapist, who relies on my work to speak for itself, through the professional referrals of doctors, family physicians, community leaders, and most importantly from past clients who have entrusted me with their health and that of their loved ones.
Even though I am “out of network”, I can supply you a statement which you yourself can submit to your health insurance company for possible reimbursement. Please be aware that I have no control or knowledge about what insurance companies do with the information you provide to them over your treatment or who may access that information. It is important to realize that there is a certain amount of risk to your confidentiality and privacy associated with submitting a mental health invoice for reimbursement. I choose for you to control your mental health information and not your insurance provider.
The Therapeutic Process
Your participation in therapy can have many beneficial results that include improving your interpersonal relationships, increasing your self-esteem, and resolving the specific problem that caused you to seek treatment.
Psychotherapy requires a collaborative effort and is a process that takes place over time. The length of time that is needed depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is the nature of the difficulties present.
Successful results are the most likely outcome when an individual or couple has the capacity and desire to understand and resolve their concerns, and learn more about their thoughts, feelings and behavior. Change requires time.
Telephone and Emergency Procedures
If you have psychiatric emergency, please call 911. If you need to contact me between sessions, please leave a message on my answering machine or with my receptionist at anytime of the work day. Telephone calls are typically returned during the day they are received during normal business hours and in the early evenings.
My fees are reasonable and competitive, please contact me directly for fees. Unless special arrangements have been made in advance, payment is due for professional services at the time of service. I accept cash, checks and require all clients leave a credit card on file for balances left overdue or your credit card can also be billed for sessions.
